Poroton or Zeigel is the industry name for a terracotta fired clay block manufactured to a high degree of accuracy.  These blocks are formed with a cellular structure of vertical perforations that reduce the material in the block, and thus the weight, while maintaining adequate strength and increasing the thermal resistance of the block.  The non-face ends of the block are keyed with a vertical tongue and groove interlock, eliminating the need for mortar between vertical faces.

Additional thermal resistance is achieved by mixing sawdust or recycled paper into the clay before firing, resulting in micro-pores in the finished block.  The inner and outer face of the block is keyed ready to accept plaster.

U values of as low as 0.19 can be achieved using monolithic construction with rendered outer face and plastered inner face.  Low thermal bridging with a y-value of 0.04W/m²K, much lower than conventional construction.

Key Advantages of Using Poroton Blocks

  • Size tolerance of +/- 1mm on height.

  • Much more cost-effective than conventional blocks and rendered walls due to speed of build

  • High fire protection.

  • Tens of thousands of houses constructed throughout Europe using these blocks.

  • Exceptional thermal values, meeting or exceeding current and immediate future requirements.

  • Largest block (365mm x 249mm x 249mm) weighs only 13kgs.

  • Fast and easy construction using semi-skilled labour, vertical joint tongue and grooved, horizontal joint laid using a thin mortar bed (supplied free with the blocks).

  • Lower longer term heating costs due to the excellent amplitude attenuation.
